Tools · CBM Calculator

Calculate cubic meters before you ask for an LCL rate.

Enter carton dimensions in centimeters. The calculator multiplies each carton volume by quantity to give the total CBM — the base unit for LCL ocean freight.

Total volume0.840 m³

840 liters across 10 cartons

How to use it

CBM is the base unit for LCL ocean freight.

For a complete rate, an agent also needs origin, destination, cargo type, ready date and whether pickup and customs are required. Above roughly 12–15 CBM, a full container (FCL) often beats consolidated (LCL) on both cost and transit.

How to calculate CBM for a freight quote

CBM means cubic metre. It describes how much physical space cargo occupies, which is one of the core inputs used to plan LCL ocean freight, warehouse handling, and container capacity.

Use packed dimensions, not product dimensions

Measure the outside of the shipping carton, crate, or pallet after the cargo is packed. Record the longest point on each side, including any overhang, reinforcement, or protective material. Convert every measurement to metres, multiply length by width by height, then multiply by the number of identical packages. When dimensions are entered in centimetres, divide the result by 1,000,000 to convert cubic centimetres to cubic metres.

For example, ten cartons measuring 60 × 40 × 35 cm occupy 0.840 CBM: 60 × 40 × 35 × 10 ÷ 1,000,000. If a shipment contains cartons of different sizes, calculate each size group separately and add the results. Do not average dimensions unless every carton really uses that same outer measurement.

What the CBM result does—and does not—tell you

For LCL shipping, the forwarder uses volume together with gross weight, origin, destination, commodity, and handling requirements. The billed revenue ton may depend on the carrier or consolidator's weight-to-measure rule, minimum charge, and local tariff. A CBM result therefore helps prepare a quote, but it is not a freight price by itself.

CBM is also useful when comparing LCL with FCL. As cargo volume grows, the fixed destination and handling charges attached to LCL can make a full container more practical. There is no universal crossover point: container type, route, density, loading method, and seasonal pricing all matter. Ask for both options when the shipment begins to occupy a substantial share of a container.

Air freight and express services use a different comparison. They convert dimensions into volumetric weight and bill the greater of volumetric and actual gross weight. Use the volumetric weight calculator for those modes rather than treating ocean CBM as chargeable kilograms.

Before sending the result to a forwarder

  1. Confirm the packed outer dimensions and gross weight for every carton, crate, or pallet type.
  2. Separate stackable cargo from pieces that cannot safely carry another package on top.
  3. State the pickup address, destination, cargo-ready date, commodity, and required delivery scope.
  4. Mention batteries, liquids, magnets, chemicals, oversized pieces, or other handling restrictions before booking.

Plan your shipment

Turn the result into a shipping plan.

Use packed volume and gross weight to compare FCL and LCL sea freight. For an urgent shipment, compare the same cartons using the volumetric weight calculator and air freight options.

Use the Incoterms guide to define buyer and seller responsibilities, and prepare product details for customs clearance review. For a DDP shipping quote, ask which duties, taxes, and destination charges are included.

Prepare the remaining inputs with the shipping guide, compare freight solutions, and bring the result to the China freight forwarding team. For more detailed explanations, browse the logistics articles.

Tool FAQ

CBM calculator questions

Short answers to the questions that most often change a freight calculation, classification, or booking instruction.

What is the formula for calculating CBM?

Multiply the packed length, width, and height, then multiply by quantity. When measurements are in metres, the result is already in cubic metres. When they are in centimetres, divide by 1,000,000. Calculate different carton sizes separately, then add those subtotals to get the shipment's total CBM.

Should I measure the carton, pallet, or the product itself?

Use the largest outside dimensions of the cargo in the condition the carrier will receive it. That normally means the sealed carton, finished crate, or fully built pallet, including overhang and protective material. Product-only dimensions understate the space required and can cause a quotation to be revised after collection.

Is freight charged only by CBM for LCL shipping?

Not always. LCL tariffs commonly compare volume with gross weight under a weight-or-measure rule and may also apply minimum, origin, destination, customs, and special-handling charges. Send both CBM and gross weight to the forwarder. The quotation should explain the charging basis and which local services are included.

At what volume should I compare LCL with FCL?

There is no fixed CBM at which FCL always becomes cheaper. The route, container type, cargo density, local charges, loading method, and current market rates change the crossover. As volume grows, ask for side-by-side LCL and FCL totals so the decision includes transit, handling, and destination costs as well as ocean freight.
